🧂 Turda Salt Mine

Turda Salt Mines (Salina Turda) is one of the most impressive underground tourist sites in Europe, and even in the world. It is an ancient salt mine that has been transformed into a unique tourist park, with vast spaces carved into the salt rock, dramatic lighting and an almost unreal atmosphere.

Today, the place offers a particularly diverse experiences:

  • 🎡 Underground Ferris Wheel;
  • 🚣 Boat ride in an underground lake inside the Theresia Mine;
  • 🎭 Amphitheater for events;
  • 🎳 Play areas: mini golf, bowling and billiards;
  • 🌬️ Salt-rich air – known to help with respiratory problems (halotherapy)

The constant temperature (about 10–12 degrees) and clean air make the visit pleasant in all seasons.

In addition to modern attractions, you can also see impressive historical elements:

  • An ancient staircase (“Staircase of the Rich”);
  • An old mining mechanism (Krívák);

📜 History

The history of the mine is very ancient and reflects the importance of salt throughout the generations:

  • 🏛️ Roman period – salt mining began about 2,000 years ago
  • 📜 1271 – first mention in official documents
  • ⚒️ Middle Ages – one of the most important sources of salt in Transylvania
  • 🏗️ 17th–19th centuries – expansion and development of the mine
  • ⛔ 1932 – cessation of mining activity
  • 💣 World War II – served as a shelter
  • 🧀 After the war – also served as storage (including cheeses)
  • 🌿 1992 – reopened to visitors
  • ✨ 2010 – extensive modern renovation and transformation into an international attraction

The mine was created as a result of a natural process that occurred millions of years ago:
