Bran Castle

Bran Castle (‘Dracula’s Castle’, the mythical Count, and the father of all vampires) was built in 1382, after which its founders were exempt from paying taxes for several centuries. Between 1438 and 1442, the castle was used as a defense against the Ottomans.
The castle changed hands several times. It was owned by Mircea the Elder, later it was transferred to the ownership of the residents of Brasov. After World War I, the residents of Brasov gave the castle as a gift to Queen Marie of Romania, and the castle began to serve as a summer residence of the Romanian royal family until 1947.
A visit to Bran must include a visit to the farmers’ market stalls dealing in haberdashery and agriculture, located at the foot of the castle.
They say that this is the castle mentioned in the book about Dracula and is used as a famous tourist spot, but in fact the real prince spent perhaps two days in prison there, and this is also questionable. The real castle mentioned in the book is called Poenari Fortress. After Vlad’s death, Poenari Fortress was abandoned again. Following many earthquakes and one landslide in 1888, part of the fortress collapsed and fell into the river. Due to its high and isolated location, it is not possible to do any real restoration. However, in the 20th century, due to the boom in interest in Vlad Dracula, this fortress also became a famous tourist spot. Tourists have to climb 1,480 steps to reach the castle. Dracula’s walls and towers still stand today.
