Overview

Visit to the Grave of Rabbi Eliezer Papo

Please note that in Romania the average daytime speed on normal days (not on holidays, weekends, children’s vacations) is 50 km/h.

Rabbi Eliezer Papo, son of Rabbi Yitzhak Papu, was a poske and kabbalist, he wrote books, the most famous of which is the book of morals – “Pele Yoetz”, which is why the rabbi is sometimes called by his name. He served as the rabbi of the Sephardic community in Silistra, Bulgaria, and for a time also headed the Sephardic community in Bucharest, the capital of Wallachia. He also wrote the books “Alef HaMagen”, “Chesed LaAlfim” and “Beit Tefilla”.

Rabbi Eliezer Pap0 was born to Yitzhak and Blanca Papo, one of the oldest Jewish families in Sarajevo, Bosnia (then Sarai-Bosna, in the Ottoman Empire). He studied in a yeshiva, and his teachers were Rabbi Eliyahu Hayon and Rabbi Moshe Danon. He acquired extensive knowledge of Torah, and in Sarajevo he also wrote his first book, “Misht HaAviv”. After his marriage, he moved to Silistra and became the head of the local Jewish community. In 1819 he arrived in Bucharest and managed and reorganized the Sephardic Jewish community in the city, according to the initial regulations established in 1811. Shortly thereafter he returned to Silistra. Rabbi Eliezer Papo wanted to immigrate to the Land of Israel, but in 1826-1827 he fell ill. In order to recover, he was given the name Yehezkel, but on the 20th of Tishrei 1828, at the age of 42, he was taken to his earthly home and buried in Silistra.

Return to Romania and travel to Constanta to visit the Central Synagogue, which was built at the end of the 19th century and served the large Jewish community in the city at that time. The building was characterized by impressive architecture and served as a religious, cultural and social center for the Jews of Constanta. Over the years and after the Holocaust, the synagogue was partially destroyed and only ruins remain. It is currently undergoing renovations and will reopen on May 1, 2026.
